Delete Siri AI Chats, Then Check These 3 Privacy Settings

Siri AI now keeps a visible conversation history in its dedicated app, making it possible to return to an earlier exchange on another Apple device. That convenience also means a private question, generated image, or personal answer can remain available longer than you expect.

Deleting those conversations is straightforward, but it is only one part of the privacy picture. Apple separates the history you can see, the data used to process a request, optional product-improvement sharing, and any information sent through the ChatGPT extension. Clearing one layer does not automatically change the others.

1. Delete conversations and shorten their lifetime

Open the Siri app on your iPhone. To remove one conversation, touch and hold it, tap Delete, then confirm. To remove several, tap the options button in the upper-right corner, choose Select, mark the conversations, tap the trash button, and confirm.

Apple's official instructions use a touch-and-hold gesture, not a swipe. That distinction matters if you try a shortcut described elsewhere and nothing happens.

For automatic cleanup, open Settings > Siri > Keep Conversations and choose a shorter retention period. Apple says conversations older than the selected 30-day or one-year period are permanently deleted. The Siri app can also open to a new conversation instead of recent history through Settings > Siri > Opens To.

Siri AI uses iCloud to privately sync conversation history across supported Apple devices. A shorter retention setting is therefore more useful than repeatedly cleaning only the screen in front of you. It reduces how long old chats remain available throughout that synced experience.

2. Review the improvement opt-in separately

Now go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements and inspect Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence. When this option is enabled, Apple says it may collect text and audio interactions, Siri app conversations, responses, device details, performance data, and approximate location to develop Siri and its foundation models.

Apple says this improvement data is associated with a rotating, device-generated identifier rather than your Apple Account, and that it removes certain personal details. It also says the data may be retained for up to two years, while a small subset reviewed for quality can be kept longer. That is materially different from a conversation shown in the Siri app.

If you do not want to contribute this information, turn the setting off. Deleting a visible chat does not substitute for reviewing this toggle, and disabling the toggle does not remove the chats you chose to keep.

3. Decide how the ChatGPT extension should work

Siri can send a request or attachment to the ChatGPT extension when you choose to use it. Apple says that, without a ChatGPT account, your IP address is obscured, the request is not tied to your Apple Account, and OpenAI must process it only to answer the request rather than store it or use it for model training, except where law requires otherwise.

If you sign in to a ChatGPT account, your ChatGPT account settings and OpenAI's privacy policies apply instead. That may be desirable if you want account features, but it is a different data arrangement. Review it under Settings > Siri > ChatGPT. You can disable the extension if you prefer to keep Siri from offering that route.

Apple also says Private Cloud Compute does not retain the personal data used to process a request and does not make it accessible to Apple. Search requests follow separate rules: some queries may be stored and used to improve Search and related features. The device's privacy disclosures indicate which path a request can take, so there is no single storage rule that covers every Siri interaction.

Lock the Siri app if other people handle your phone

Deletion is not the only useful control. On the Home Screen, touch and hold the Siri app and choose Require Face ID, Touch ID, or Passcode if the option appears. A locked app requires authentication to open, relocks after you quit it, and keeps its information out of places such as notification previews, Search, Siri suggestions, and CarPlay.

This does not encrypt a weak iPhone passcode or protect someone who can already authenticate as you. It does add a barrier when you hand an unlocked phone to a friend, child, technician, or coworker for another task.

Turning Siri off is the broader reset

Apple provides a more aggressive path for people who want to remove local Siri and Dictation transcripts rather than manage individual chats. Turning off Siri in Settings > Siri, then disabling Dictation under Settings > General > Keyboard, deletes transcripts stored on the device and used for personalization.

That step also removes functionality, so it is unnecessary for routine cleanup. Most people can get the result they want by deleting sensitive conversations, selecting a shorter retention period, checking the improvement opt-in, and deciding whether to use ChatGPT while signed in. Those controls address different data paths; treating them separately is the practical way to manage Siri AI privacy.
