CarPlay Arrow Hidden After iOS 27.2? Try These Safe Fixes
Some drivers are reporting a frustrating navigation problem after installing iOS 27.2: the route interface in Waze or Google Maps can cover the vehicle arrow on the CarPlay screen. The app may still calculate the route and announce turns, but the most useful visual reference—where the car sits on the map—can become hard to see.
This is a user-reported issue, not a confirmed iOS 27.2 defect. Apple has not listed it among the update's known problems, and neither Apple nor Google has published a specific fix. Reports also span different iPhone and vehicle combinations, which makes it too early to blame one model or head unit.
There is still a sensible way to troubleshoot it. Park first, then work from the least disruptive test to the most involved reset.
First, find out whether the problem follows the app
With the vehicle safely stopped, open the same destination in Waze, Google Maps, and Apple Maps. If the arrow is obscured in only one app, the layout problem is more likely tied to that app. If all three display incorrectly, CarPlay, the iPhone connection, or the vehicle's infotainment software becomes the stronger suspect.
Also compare full-screen and dashboard views. Waze supports both on CarPlay, and switching between them can force the map panel to redraw. That is a useful test, but it is not a permanent fix.
For wired CarPlay, disconnect and reconnect the cable. If the behavior continues, try a known-good data cable and another supported USB port. Apple specifically recommends both steps for connection problems. For wireless CarPlay, confirm that Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled, then open the CarPlay network in Wi-Fi settings and make sure Auto-Join is on.
Restart before you reset
Close the affected navigation app, restart the iPhone, and restart the car or infotainment system. The exact head-unit restart method varies by vehicle, so use the owner's manual rather than holding random dashboard buttons. A restart clears the active CarPlay session without erasing saved cars, routes, or phone settings.
Next, install current updates for Waze and Google Maps from the App Store. Check the vehicle manufacturer's support page or companion app for infotainment firmware as well. iOS 27.2 was released on October 26, 2026, and includes security updates; Apple also notes that iOS cannot be downgraded after installation. That makes a rollback a poor troubleshooting plan even if an older build did not show the same symptom.
Re-pair CarPlay if the layout stays broken
If the arrow remains hidden across repeated sessions, remove the saved CarPlay pairing and set it up again. On the iPhone, go to Settings > General > CarPlay, choose the vehicle, tap Forget This Car, and reconnect by USB or the vehicle's wireless pairing process.
This step rebuilds the relationship between the phone and head unit. It can help when an update leaves behind a bad session or connection profile, but it will not repair an app-side rendering bug. Do not jump to erasing the iPhone or factory-resetting the vehicle system; those actions create far more work without evidence that they address this particular display problem.
Use a safer temporary setup
If one navigation app renders correctly, use it until the affected app or iOS receives an update. If every map app has the problem, rely on spoken directions and the compact next-turn panel only when those elements remain clear. Keep screen glances brief, and never try to change views or reset CarPlay while moving.
Apple Maps is a practical comparison tool, but it is not guaranteed to avoid the issue. The reports center on Waze and Google Maps, yet the cause has not been isolated. Treat any workaround as temporary rather than proof that a specific company caused the bug.
Report the exact combination that fails
Useful bug reports are specific. Note the iPhone model, iOS version and build, navigation app version, vehicle or aftermarket head-unit model, and whether the connection is wired or wireless. Take a screenshot or photo only while parked. In Waze, disconnect the phone from CarPlay, open Help and feedback > Report an issue, choose the in-car-system option, and attach the image if requested.
That detail matters because CarPlay spans three layers: the navigation app, iOS, and the vehicle display. A symptom that looks identical can originate in any of them. Until Apple or Google confirms a cause, the best response is measured: isolate the app, restart the connection, re-pair CarPlay once, and avoid destructive resets.
