Use PS5 Rest Mode for Downloads—Shut Down Before Unplugging

PlayStation 5 owners are almost evenly divided between Rest Mode and a full shutdown, according to a Sony executive cited by BGR. That split makes sense because neither option is universally better. Rest Mode keeps selected background functions available; shutting down stops them and prepares the console to be disconnected safely.

The right choice depends on what should happen while you are away. Use Rest Mode when you want updates, remote downloads, controller charging or Remote Play. Turn the PS5 off before unplugging it, moving it, leaving for an extended period or when you do not want any standby features running.

Rest Mode only helps when its features are enabled

Press the PS button, open the control center, choose Power, then select Enter Rest Mode. The screen turns off and the console’s indicator eventually settles on solid orange. Blinking orange means the PS5 is still entering Rest Mode, so wait before touching the power cable.

Rest Mode is configurable rather than all-or-nothing. Open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. The important choices are Stay Connected to the Internet, Enable Turning On PS5 from Network and Supply Power to USB Ports.

Leave the network connection enabled if the console should download games bought through the PlayStation App, receive preordered titles or update software while idle. Enable network wake if you expect the PlayStation App or Remote Play to turn on the console. Without those switches, putting the PS5 in Rest Mode does not guarantee the remote features will work.

Choose download and installation behavior separately

For game and app updates, go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates. Sony provides separate controls for Auto-Download and Auto-Install in Rest Mode.

That distinction matters if a game is suspended. Sony advises enabling only Auto-Download when you do not want the suspended game closed. The update file can arrive in the background, and you can decide when to install it after resuming. Auto-Install is more convenient when being ready for the next multiplayer session matters more than preserving a paused game.

Some updates still need approval, so Rest Mode is not a promise that every title will be ready. Storage also has to be available. Check the Downloads/Uploads queue after waking the console if an update did not finish.

Set USB power for the controller you actually use

Rest Mode can charge a DualSense or another compatible accessory, but USB power has its own setting. Under Features Available in Rest Mode, set Supply Power to USB Ports to Always or 3 Hours. Sony says compatible newer PS5 models in the CFI-2000 group can also offer Adaptive charging, which adjusts the charging period to the connected controller’s remaining battery level.

Three hours is a sensible default for many players because it provides a charging window without keeping the ports powered indefinitely. Adaptive is preferable when it appears and the accessory supports it. If you charge controllers from a separate dock or wall adapter, switch PS5 USB power off and avoid consuming standby power for a feature you do not use.

Remote Play needs three settings, not one

To wake a resting PS5 from a phone, tablet, PC or PlayStation Portal, first open Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play. Then return to the Rest Mode features and enable both Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning On PS5 from Network.

A full shutdown removes that remote-wake path. The console cannot download or install content, charge a controller or accept a Remote Play connection while it is off. That is the trade: shutdown minimizes background activity; Rest Mode preserves specific conveniences.

Power off before touching the plug

To shut down properly, open the control center and select Power > Turn Off PS5. The indicator flashes white while the system closes, then goes dark. Do not unplug the console until the light is completely off.

Sony warns that disconnecting AC power while the indicator is lit or blinking can cause data loss, corruption or console damage. Solid orange is not “off”; it means Rest Mode. This is especially important for consoles connected to a switched power strip. Do not flip the strip off simply because the television is dark.

A full shutdown is the safer choice before moving the PS5, cleaning around its cables, leaving home for a long trip or during periods of unreliable electricity. Rest Mode is designed for daily convenience, but it still depends on continuous power. A blackout can interrupt a background update or a suspended session just as abruptly as pulling the plug.

You do not need one permanent rule. Keep Rest Mode configured for the functions you genuinely use, select Auto-Download without Auto-Install when protecting a suspended game matters, and shut down before disconnecting power. The orange light is useful only when you treat it as an active low-power state—not as a substitute for turning the console off.
